The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nadowli-Kaleo District, Mary Haruna, has urged students of Kaleo Senior High Technical School to remain disciplined and focused on their academic pursuits as they prepare for their final examinations.

Hon. Haruna made the call when she joined students and staff of her alma mater to mark the end of this year’s fasting period with prayers and thanksgiving. Despite her demanding official schedule, the DCE took time to worship with the school community, expressing gratitude to Allah for a successful fasting season.

Addressing the gathering, she emphasised the importance of education in shaping the future of the nation, reminding students that they are the next generation of leaders. She encouraged them to take their studies seriously and avoid distractions that could jeopardise their academic success.

In a candid remark, the DCE advised students to put romantic relationships on hold until after their final examinations, noting that such engagements could divert their attention at a critical time in their academic journey.

Touching on the use of mobile phones in schools, Hon. Haruna acknowledged the challenges authorities face in enforcing the ban on smartphones on campus. While reiterating that students are officially not permitted to use phones in school, she admitted that many, particularly final-year students, often find ways to access them. She therefore urged students to use such devices responsibly and for educational purposes, suggesting that disciplined usage could influence future policy considerations by the Ghana Education Service regarding smartphone use in schools.

The DCE also took a moment to reflect on her own time as a student of the institution, expressing pride in returning to her former school. She noted that today’s students are more privileged, with greater access to teachers, textbooks, and learning resources due to advancements in technology. As such, she stressed that students have no justification for poor academic performance.

“I can see potential leaders among you,” she stated, adding that achieving success would require commitment, discipline, and a strong focus on learning.

From the school, Hon. Haruna proceeded to the Kaleo Central Mosque, where she joined the wider Muslim community to offer prayers in gratitude for a successful fasting period. Addressing the congregation, she commended the Muslim community for its spiritual leadership and dedication throughout the period.

She prayed that the fasting would be fruitful for each individual and for the community as a whole. The DCE further urged members of the community to continue fostering peaceful coexistence with people of other religious backgrounds, noting that unity and tolerance remain essential for development in the district.

The event, marked by prayers and words of encouragement, served as both a spiritual and motivational moment for students and the broader Kaleo community as they reflected on the significance of the fasting period.
