Ghana's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) officially transitioned to vehicle number plates featuring the "26" suffix on January 2, 2026. This rollout serves as a continuation of the existing year-based registration system because a planned high-tech digital regime was halted by legal and legislative obstacles.

The reasons for the delay of the new system amount to a number of compelling interventions, and one of them is the parliamentary recess: The DVLA intended to launch a new system that would drop year-based suffixes in favor of zonal codes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. However, Parliament went on recess in December 2025 without passing necessary amendments to Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2180, which governs plate specifications.

The next of the reasons is the legal injunction. The Vehicle Embossment Association of Ghana (VEMAG) filed a lawsuit and secured a High Court injunction on December 23, 2025, to restrain the DVLA from rolling out the digital plates until legal merits are determined.

Nonetheless, there are some key features of the postponed digital system saga that need highlighting. Once the required legal amendments are passed, the DVLA plans to transition to a more modern platform with the following features:

RFID Technology: Smart plates will enable electronic scanning for vehicle tracking, automated road tolling, and speed monitoring.

Zonal Codes: The year of registration (e.g., "26") will be replaced by regional and zonal identifiers (e.g., "AD" for Adenta) to improve identification and resale fairness.

Individual Ownership:

Plates will be linked to individual owners rather than just the vehicle, requiring owners to remove them upon transferring vehicle ownership. For the time being, all new vehicle registrations will use the standard "26" suffix. Vehicle owners can continue using existing "Departure from Port" (DP) stickers and "Defective Vehicle" (DV) plates until further notice. Updates on the full digital rollout will be available on the DVLA Ghana official website.
