Ghana have been drawn in group L, together with England Croatia and Panama. That's a decent group we could expect from a World Cup tournament. We couldn't have asked for a better draw.
England is expected to qualify from the group. Ghana and Croatia have to fight for second place with not much head about Panama, they could spring a surprise as Coster Rica did in the 2014 World Cup, they qualified ahead of Italy and England in their group.
Looking at Ghana's group and the mode of qualification to the next stage, it shouldn't be a big problem for us. Four points from the group stage may be enough to guarantee qualification.
Besides the best two teams in a group who advance straight to the next stage, the eight(8) best third-place teams also qualify for the knockout stage. So a team with four points in a group is more likely to qualify, and this should not be a problem for Ghana. We may argue that, with the experience in world cups, Ghana should not be looking at only qualifying from the group stage but get to the final and win the trophy.
However, with the current crop of players in the squad, Ghanaians should lower their expectations. There are few talented guys in the team who can do things on a good day, but honestly, as a country we lacked match winners in the team to be able carry us far in the tournament. If things are not going our way in a game, that player who can spring up from no where and get us back into a game is not there. We just hope Kudus can take up that mantle else, your guess is as good as mine. We aren't good enough to produce a performance in the upcoming tournament.
We are in the process of building a team for the future and participating in the world cup is what the team needs at the moment. Playing in a world cup gives players that kind of confidence and arrogance and anyone who play in the world cup will have that self belief which is important for team building.
Black Stars are always Black Stars. When the odds are against us, that's where we provide the upsets.
